  • German Galushchenko: russia must be deprived of the status of an IAEA member state
Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, posted 06 December 2022 14:34

The russian federation must be deprived of the status of a member state of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko expressed this conviction during the telethon Yedyni Novyny (United News).

"We are sure that russia should be revoked from membership in this organization", he stressed.

Despite the fact that the USSR was one of the founders of the IAEA, and russia became the successor of the Soviet Union, the role and place in this organization of the country that commits acts of nuclear terrorism should be reconsidered.

"The russian war in Ukraine changed everything that existed before in the security systems, including in the nuclear sphere. Under current circumstances, we cannot be motivated by old models, we have to make new and quick decisions", Herman Halushchenko is convinced.

The Minister stressed that russian occupation of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe - Ukrainian ZNPP, as well as deployment of armed people, heavy equipment and explosives on its territory is not just a complete violation of nuclear safety rules, but also the basics of common sense.

"We can hardly expect that something will change in russia's attitude. But it is critical for us to have IAEA representatives on the territory of our nuclear facilities. I personally invited Mr. Grossi and his mission to all nuclear facilities in Ukraine to see what is happening, to see the russian shelling and its consequences", noted Herman Galushchenko.

The Minister emphasized that the occupied ZNPP is the biggest loss of the Ukrainian energy system during the war, because the plant has 6 power units, which in February supplied more than 6,000 MW of electricity to the Ukrainian energy system.
