Implementation of state veteran policy also includes gender aspect: Yulia Laputina

During a meeting with UN Women Representative in Ukraine Sabine Freizer Gunes, Minister for Veterans Affairs of Ukraine Yulia Laputina noted the importance of continuing support from the UN Women Representative in Ukraine.

At the beginning of the meeting, Yulia Laputina briefed Sabine Freizer Gunes on the main strategic goals of the Ministry for Veterans Affairs: “The Ministry is an implementer/co-implementer of 20 action items to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security until 2025. Guided by the principle of equal rights and opportunities for women and men, we take into account the needs of women veterans, women veterans/IDPs in the implementation of a number of measures and in the development of draft orders of the Ministry for Veterans Affairs, laws and other regulations.”

In particular, the priorities for joint work on gender policy in the security and defence sector and peacebuilding, strengthening the national gender mechanism and supporting gender-responsive reforms in all areas at the national and regional levels remain unchanged.

“The Ministry for Veterans Affairs is taking a comprehensive approach to the system of transition from military to civilian careers, which should be human-centred and focus on the real needs of female and male veterans,” the Minister said.

According to Sabine Freizer Gunes, UN Women in Ukraine is a permanent partner of the Ministry for Veterans Affairs of Ukraine in the issues of equal rights, opportunities and gender equality.

“In overcoming gender stereotypes in various spheres of life, we focus primarily on the equal rights of men and women defenders in the defence of the state. The implementation of the state veteran policy within the framework of our system of transition from military service to civilian life and large-scale projects in communities also includes a gender aspect. In particular, when creating the institute of veteran assistants, developing veteran sports and supporting veteran entrepreneurship. These are modern civilised standards that we focus on, in particular, thanks to our international partners,” said Yulia Laputina.
