On April 26, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky took part in official events marking the 35th anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy.
In the presence of the Head of State and the Head of the Government, a license from the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine was handed over to the Chornobyl NPP for the commissioning of the SNFS-2 facility (Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage).
It should be noted that SNFS-2 is intended for long-term storage of nuclear fuel at the Chornobyl NPP. The storage was constructed with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The Prime Minister, together with the President of Ukraine, also paid tribute to the victims of the Chornobyl accident by laying flowers at the Monument to the Heroes of Chornobyl.
Denys Shmyhal expressed gratitude to all those who, at the cost of their own lives and health, eliminated the consequences of the catastrophe.
"35 years have passed since one of the worst tragedies in human history - the Chornobyl disaster - happened. But heroism has no time bar. Today, we express gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives and health to save the lives of millions. A low bow and great respect to the people who saved Ukraine and the world from the consequences of the catastrophe," the Prime Minister said.
