Last week, Ukraine passed the “equator” of winter. The condition of the power system remains difficult but under control. This was stated by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at a government meeting on January 24.

“From the beginning of the first massive missile attack on our power system, we realized that this would be the most difficult winter in our history. So far, all russian attempts to plunge Ukraine into darkness have failed. We have passed the first half of the winter with dignity. But it is too early to relax. The work goes on,” Denys Shmyhal emphasized.

According to the Prime Minister, due to the latest large-scale enemy shelling, Ukraine has lost another part of its electricity generation. The situation is complicated by the fact that a significant part of the generating capacities are located in the temporarily occupied territories: “Among them is Zaporizhzhya NPP, which the russian terrorists have turned into a potential threat to the whole world. Therefore, we must adhere to the energy consumption limits and resort to emergency shutdowns should they be exceeded.”

Denys Shmyhal also emphasized that Ukraine had enough resources to carry on and complete the heating season as usual. About 11 billion cubic meters of gas are stored in gas storage facilities, and almost 1.2 million tonnes of coal are in stock. Also the day before, the Government adopted a resolution allowing the state-owned company Naftogaz of Ukraine to attract a grant from the EBRD worth almost EUR 189 million. The company will be able to import additional volumes of gas with these funds.
