Government resolution on the academic year: key information for students, parents and teachers

Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, posted 20 August 2025 20:52

The Government has adopted a resolution specifying the start and end dates of the academic year for general secondary education institutions in Ukraine. The document states that the 2025/2026 academic year will run from 1 September 2025 to 30 June 2026.

It is important to note that 30 June is the latest possible date for the end of the academic year. However, the actual structure of the academic year, including the specific end date of classes and the start of holidays, is determined by the pedagogical council of each educational institution.

Who decides on the end of classes and holidays?

This decision falls within the authority of educational institutions. The pedagogical council makes the decision, taking into account:

  • Academic workload;
  • Security situation in the region;
  • Needs and condition of students;
  • Readiness of teachers.

As a result, the dates for concluding classes, holding the last bell ceremony, and the duration of summer holidays may vary across different educational institutions.

Is June a mandatory academic month?

No, an educational institution may conclude the academic year in May or continue classes into June. Alternatively, schools may organise consultations, individual lessons, project days, or educational excursions during June. These formats help address learning losses but are optional, not mandatory, for educational institutions.
