  • Ministry of Energy: Ukraine resumes electricity exports

Ukraine's Energy Minister German Galushchenko has signed an ordinance enabling the resumption of electricity exports amid a surplus of generating capacity.

"The Ukrainian power system has been operating for almost two months without any restrictions on consumers, with a power surplus. We have achieved this result thanks to the titanic work of power engineers and our international partners who helped restore the system. We've gone through the most challenging winter. The next step is to resume electricity exports, which will allow us to attract additional financial resources for the necessary reconstruction of the destroyed and damaged energy infrastructure," said German Galushchenko.

The export capacity authorized by the European association for the cooperation of transmission system operators ENTSO-E is 400 MW. However, actual export volumes may fluctuate depending on the time of day and market conditions. The Minister of Energy emphasized that meeting the electricity needs of Ukrainian consumers is a priority.

"Providing electricity to our consumers is an absolute priority. Therefore, electricity exports will remain in operation provided that Ukrainian consumers are supplied with electricity and may be suspended if the situation changes," said German Galushchenko.

According to the Minister, the increase in generation and the launch of exports is the response of Ukrainian power engineers to russian shelling and attempts to destroy the power system.

Just to recap: Ukraine exported electricity to Moldova and the EU from June to October 11 last year. During this period, 2.6 billion kilowatt-hours were sold.

Given that exporters were assigned special responsibilities to ensure the availability of electricity for household consumers, UAH 2.8 billion of the profits earned by exporters were paid to support the preferential price for the population.
