Speaking in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the occasion of the Constitution Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Ukrainian power engineers for their work during the difficult winter amid hostile attacks on energy infrastructure facilities.
The President highlighted Ukraine’s significant potential for the development of nuclear and green energy, as well as energy storage systems.
“Our energy potential allows Ukraine to be one of the guarantors of energy security for the whole of Europe. The entire continent benefits from our power generation, including nuclear power. Our country’s priority is green generation and large-scale energy storage capacities,” he stressed.
As a reminder, Ukraine’s energy system has been a constant target of massive hostile attacks since 10 October 2022.
During this period, 24 power generation facilities, half of the transmission substations and 43% of the transmission networks have been hit. Some of the facilities were hit several times.
By the end of the heating season, Ukraine had temporarily lost 44% of its nuclear generation, 78% of its thermal power capacity, 66% of its combined heat and power capacity, 12% of its hydropower capacity, 75% of its wind generation and more than 20% of its solar generation due to destruction and occupation.
According to the World Bank, the losses amount to about USD 11 billion.
In preparation for the upcoming heating season, Ukraine is currently undergoing the largest repair campaign in its history in the energy sector.
