The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed its support for Ukraine's intentions to expand its nuclear power sector, including the completion of the construction of units at the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), and expresses readiness to provide technical support for the project. During a meeting between Ukraine's Energy Minister German Galushchenko and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, the parties discussed the details of the project, as well as the protection of the country's key energy facilities.

German Galushchenko noted that Ukraine saw the final stage of negotiations with Bulgaria on the supply of reactors. Construction can begin as soon as the Verkhovna Rada passes the relevant bill. In response, Rafael Grossi stressed the importance of this project and assured that the IAEA would support its implementation.

Rafael Grossi drew attention to the importance of the new units construction project, noting the IAEA's supports. He added that the agency's participation would help to ensure compliance with high nuclear safety standards and proposed to establish a technical support mission to ensure the safe integration of new components into existing systems, which, according to him, would increase the credibility of the project in terms of nuclear safety.
