November 26, the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Ihor Nasalyk met with representatives of the Westinghouse Electric Company. During the meeting, the parties focused on providing Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPP) with nuclear fuel.
Representatives of the Westinghouse assured that the company has all necessary technical and logistic resources to reach a 100 percent delivery of nuclear fuel to all nuclear power units of Ukrainian NPP. Currently, the company is providing fuel to 6 NPP units of the WWER-1000 type, and the third unit of the South Ukraine NPP has switched over to the Westinghouse company.
"Energy security has always been and remains under the constant supervision by the President and the Government of Ukraine", said Ihor Nasalyk. "Given the current threats to the national security of Ukraine, on condition of termination of nuclear fuel supply from the Russian Federation, we are ready to ensure the work of power units of Ukrainian NPPs using the fuel of the Westinghouse".
Moreover, the construction of a Centralized spent fuel storage facility in cooperation with Holtech International was an important step towards strengthening energy security. This will allow us to change the existing scheme for handling nuclear fuel spent by domestic power plants and to get rid of the dependence on the temporary storage services offered by Russian enterprises.
The parties discussed extended cooperation regarding the participation of the company in the construction of a nuclear fuel plant in Ukraine using the technology of Westinghouse and implementation of the Ukraine-EU Energy Bridge project.
