On 1 December 2023, the International Court of Justice issued the Order on provisional measures in the case regarding the Arbitral Award of 3 October 1899 (“Guyana v. Venezuela”).
The Order obliges Venezuela to refrain from taking any action that would modify the situation in the Essequibo region, and both parties to refrain from any action that might aggravate or extend the dispute before the Court or make it more difficult to resolve.
Ukraine emphasizes the need to fulfill legally binding decisions of the International Court of Justice. The resolution of any disputed issue and disagreement shall be done only on the basis of the mechanisms provided for by international law, in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
The parties to the dispute must comply with the legally binding Order of the International Court of Justice on provisional measures and must not resort to unilateral actions that could aggravate the situation.
