On February 6, 2023, during a meeting between Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Ukraine Kim Hyung-tae, the parties discussed cooperation in the nuclear industry, renewable energy, and assistance to the energy sector of Ukraine. In particular, German Galushchenko thanked his Korean counterparts for 8 humanitarian cargoes with energy equipment totaling about 105 tonnes that have already arrived in Ukraine.

The Minister informed the Ambassador about the state of Ukraine’s energy system after massive missile attacks and emphasized that Ukraine, like the Republic of Korea, had “unpredictable” neighbors threatening nuclear and radiation safety around the world.

German Galushchenko also outlined promising areas of cooperation between Ukraine and South Korea: “These are nuclear energy and the development of renewable energy sources that will become the basis for a modernized Ukrainian energy system.”

The Ukrainian side proposed to establish cooperation to exchange information on technologies for the protection and security of energy facilities in Ukraine and the Republic of Korea.

Kim Hyung-tae confirmed the Republic of Korea’s intention to continue supporting the Ukrainian energy sector, emphasizing the Korean side’s interest in participating in medium- and long-term projects to restore and rebuild the Ukrainian energy sector.
