  • German Galushchenko: Gas turbines provided by Japan will add more than 200 MW to the power system
Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, posted 08 January 2024 12:55

Another batch of energy equipment for Ukraine, provided by Japan with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in the form of gas turbines, is an important contribution to the decentralisation of electricity generation.

This was emphasised by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko during a media briefing.

“This is primarily about decentralised generation. The turbines will add more than 200 MW to the power system. The corresponding generating capacity will be installed and distributed throughout Ukraine,” he said, adding that the implementation of this project was one of the stages of the Energy Strategy of Ukraine.

According to German Galushchenko, it is also important to deliver and install high-voltage autotransformers, which are expensive and large-sized equipment that russians have been targeting during massive attacks.

“Two have already been installed. Another seven have already been purchased, and later our Japanese partners will provide two more autotransformers to strengthen the reliability of electricity supply,” the Minister said.

According to Christophoros Politis, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Ukraine, UNDP will continue to cooperate with the Ministry of Energy in 2024 to support Ukrainian energy sector companies whose facilities were damaged by russian attacks, as well as to purchase power equipment for decentralisation of generation. In addition, another important area of joint cooperation is the implementation of the green transition in the energy sector.

As a reminder, during a visit to Kyiv, Japanese Foreign Minister Yōko Kamikawa announced the transfer of seven high-voltage autotransformers and five gas turbines to Ukraine. In addition to this equipment, the Government of Japan and UNDP have already provided 1,200 generators and 1,000 power units to government agencies and emergency services in Ukraine. In addition, 500 generators and 6 mobile power supply vehicles were delivered to Ukraine through JICA.
