First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Dzhaparova met with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić who was visiting Ukraine for the second time since the beginning of the full-scale war of the russian federation against Ukraine.

The key topics of the discussion were the role and place of the Council of Europe in overcoming the consequences of russian aggression, as well as the preparations for the Fourth Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe.

Emine Dzhaparova emphasised that an important place in the Summit’s decisions should be given to the issue of russia’s responsibility for the crimes committed in Ukraine, including the establishment of a Special Tribunal and a compensation mechanism for damages caused by the aggression.

“It is important to ensure the inevitability of punishment for those responsible for war crimes. This is our common duty to those who have died at the hands of the russian aggressor since 2014. The Council of Europe should play a leading role in establishing a Special Tribunal to bring russia to justice for the crime of aggression,” the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stressed.

The parties paid special attention to the prospect of creating a register of damages caused by the russian aggression against Ukraine, which would be an important step towards the creation of a comprehensive compensation mechanism.

Emine Dzhaparova thanked Marija Pejčinović Burić for taking a clear position and unwavering support for Ukraine in its fight against the russian aggressor.
