Remembrance candles lit all across the world to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor

On November 24, 2018, a large-scale international action "Let’s Light a Candle of Remembrance" came to the end in Kyiv. The action was aimed to unite Ukrainians all around the world and foreign citizens as well to commemorate one of the atrocities in the history of humanity of the twentieth century - the Great Famine of 1932-1933.

The action "Let’s Light a Candle of Remembrance" started on September 1 in the capital of Ukraine and during 85 days it was held in 85 nooks of the world, in particular in Canada, the USA, Turkey, Japan, Italy, Hungary, China, Czech Republic, Australia, Switzerland, Vatican, Spain, Portugal, Tajikistan, Nigeria, Morocco, Slovakia, Finland, Romania, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Paraguay, Germany, Mozambique, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Armenia, Georgia, Bulgaria, Iraq and others.

The commemorative events took place in the premises of the Ukrainian embassies and consulates, in certain landmarks connected to Ukraine. Participants lit a symbolic candle of memory and daily read the names of children who back in 1933 had failed to sit at school desks.

The progress of the action was revealed on the website of the 85th Anniversary of the Holodomor, developed by the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance.

The International campaign was initiated by the Ukrainian World Congress. It was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance and the National Museum Holodomor Victims Memorial.
