Ukraine and the European Investment Bank have signed agreements to finance the restoration of energy and critical infrastructure. The signing took place during a meeting between Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and European Investment Bank (EIB) President Nadia Calviño on 10 February in Kyiv.
The event was also attended by Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Communities and Territories Development, and Sergii Marchenko, Minister of Finance of Ukraine.
The Head of Ukrainian Government said that, in particular, the EIB would allocate EUR 16.5 million to restore critical infrastructure and implement energy efficiency.
“The second agreement paves the way for EUR 100 million to be allocated for the restoration of water, heat and sewage facilities, as well as for the modernisation of basic social services in the education, healthcare and housing sectors,” said Denys Shmyhal, thanking the Bank for helping Ukraine to rebuild the infrastructure damaged by the russian aggression.
In addition, the meeting between Denys Shmyhal and Nadia Calviño focused on financing within the framework of bilateral cooperation. According to the Prime Minister, the EIB’s project portfolio in Ukraine is one of the largest and consists of 25 projects in the field of transport, social infrastructure and energy worth EUR 4.95 billion.
In his discussion with the EIB President, the Prime Minister also noted a number of other areas of cooperation that required further investment. These include, in particular, border crossing points and road infrastructure, support for small and medium-sized businesses, municipalities and the stability of the energy sector.
The parties also discussed economic issues. In particular, Denys Shmyhal informed about the key budget expenditures for this year and stressed the importance of supporting small and medium-sized businesses.
“Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the EIB has mobilised over EUR 2 billion to support Ukraine. Thank you for your significant contribution to strengthening the resilience and development of our country,” the Prime Minister emphasised.
