  • Denys Maliuska met with new head of ICRC Delegation to Ukraine, Jürg Eglin

    On 26 April 2023, Minister of Justice of Ukraine Denys Maliuska met with the new head of the Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Ukraine, Jürg Eglin, in Kyiv. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine Olena Vysotska. The parties discussed issues related to prisoners of war, measures taken in close cooperation between the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine and the ICRC, as well as compliance with the fundamental norms of international humanitarian law in the current realities of violation of all possible principles of warfare by the aggressor state.

    The Minister of Justice of Ukraine Denys Maliuska thanked the representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross for the material and technical assistance provided in the context of the aggressive war of the russian federation. The Minister of Justice emphasised: "Ukraine is always open to the recommendations of its partners in the field of improving existing legislation and developing its legal policy."

    In their turn, representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to visit places of detention of prisoners of war and stressed that Ukraine demonstrated strict compliance with the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War of 1929 and international humanitarian law in general. According to Cordula Droege, Chief Legal Officer and Head of the Legal Department at the ICRC Headquarters in Geneva, over the years of its independence, Ukraine has built a stable and transparent system of national law in accordance with the principles of IHL, which makes it a reliable partner in the eyes of the international community.

    The parties thanked each other for the meaningful dialogue and reaffirmed their readiness for further cooperation to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law.
