Minister of Justice of Ukraine Denys Maliuska met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ireland to Ukraine Therese Martina Healy.

Denys Maliuska thanked the Ambassador for supporting the creation and implementation of the international compensation mechanism for damage caused by the armed aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine, as well as the register of damages. He noted that legal solutions were being sought on the basis of an international treaty that would form the basis of a mechanism for compensation for damage caused by the russian aggression against Ukraine.

The basic provision of the international treaty will be to define and enshrine russia’s responsibility for the aggression and military actions against Ukraine and its strict obligation to compensate for the losses, damages and injuries caused. The treaty will become the legal basis for the establishment and operation of the compensation mechanism and will establish the basic principles of its operation.

The Minister of Justice of Ukraine also called for increased efforts to impose sanctions and freeze the assets of persons directly or indirectly involved in the armed aggression in order to prevent the financing and support of the armed aggression against Ukraine and its consequences. At present, there is a need to identify and develop legal mechanisms that would allow for the legal transfer of such frozen assets of sanctioned persons to a compensation fund that will operate as part of a special compensation mechanism to compensate war victims and rebuild Ukraine.

The Ambassador, for her part, stressed that Ireland had a clear and consistent position in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and condemned russia’s actions.
