  • Denys Shmyhal: Cultural heritage sites require increased attention

    On September 22, as part of a working trip to Sumy region, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal visited Sumy Nikanor Onatsky Regional Art Museum and the National Academic Drama and Musical Comedy Theater named after M.S. Shchepkin. The Head of Government was accompanied by Minister of Culture and Information Policy Oleksandr Tkachenko and head of Sumy Regional State Administration Roman Hryshchenko.

    Denys Shmyhal stressed that both the city of Sumy and Sumy region can boast with cultural heritage sites that deserve attention from local governments and state authorities.

    "The regional art museum has a collection of more than 17,000 works of national and world importance. They have been successfully exhibited abroad. This museum and many other cultural and educational institutions have the potential to become powerful tourist magnets", stressed the Prime Minister.

    According to him, Sumy Regional State Administration has already prepared design and estimate documentation, which will allow to solve the problems of the museum, which is the region’s property.

    During a visit to the National Academic Drama and Musical Comedy Theater named after M.S. Shchepkin, the Prime Minister appraised the canvas wall art "Birds of Happiness", which is located in the lobby of the institution. Denys Shmyhal supported the initiative to offer a picture for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

    The Prime Minister also reminded that the President of Ukraine had set a task to expand the "Great Construction" program, adding cultural and historical monuments to it. "The Ministry of Culture, together with the regional administrations, is engaged in preparing and providing lists of facilities for participation in the program. Aftermath those of top priority will be selected from those lists," the Head of Government said.

    According to the Minister of Culture and Information Policy Oleksandr Tkachenko, an expert council will be approved in the near future to select the priority objects for the program. "We will give preference to those objects that can become tourist magnets. The budget already has the primary resource for next year to start reconstruction," Oleksandr Tkachenko emphasized.
