Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Viktoriia Kyreieva took part in the discussion “Tracking and tackling methane emissions in Ukraine: Policies and actions to achieve the Global Methane Pledge goal”. The event was organised by DiXi Group think tank and Net Zero World Initiative in cooperation with the International Energy Agency and supported by the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.

The participants discussed the current state of methane measurement and reduction in Ukraine, prospects for improvement and possible technological solutions prepared by DiXi Group (for the oil and gas sector) and Net Zero World Initiative (for the coal industry).

“Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, and its impact on climate change is 80 times more powerful than that of CO₂ in the short term. Reducing methane emissions is one of the most effective ways to slow down global warming,” said Viktoriia Kyreieva.

To this end, Ukraine joined the Global Methane Pledge in 2021 and pledged to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030. In addition, the need to harmonise legislation with European standards, in particular EU Regulation 2024/1787, which provides for the establishment of a reliable system for monitoring and reporting methane emissions, was emphasised.

On the sidelines of COP29, Ukraine also presented the results of a cross-sectoral methane emissions study covering the oil and gas sector, coal industry, waste management and agriculture. In this process, Ukraine is actively cooperating with international partners, including DiXi Group, the International Finance Corporation, the Net Zero World Initiative and others.
