It is important to make every effort
to solve the problems involved in overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl
catastrophe. This was stated by Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr
Groysman during the plenary meeting of the Nuclear
Safety Account Pledging Conference to complete the construction of the Interim
Spent Nuclear Fuel Dry Storage Facility (ISF-2) on Monday, April 25.
The Prime Minister informed that in some
years the costs of Ukraine for liquidation of the Chernobyl catastrophe reached
8-10% of the State budget. The total losses of the country by 2015, according
to expert estimates, were amounted to about 180 billion dollars. In general,
direct losses and expenses on overcoming of consequences have amounted to tens
of billions of dollars for 30 years, he said.
"One of the most important
challenges for Ukraine and its international partners is the construction of
major facilities involved in decommissioning of the Chernobyl NPP and
transformation of "Shelter" into the ecologically safe system,"
he said.
The head of Government said that the
construction of ISF is nearing completion. The current shortfall amounts to
roughly 105 million euros to its accomplishment. "Right now we need
consolidated responsibility and constructive cooperation on a range of issues
that still need to be addressed," Volodymyr Groysman stressed.
The Prime Minister stressed that
Ukraine fulfills agreements with international partners regarding the solution
of the Chernobyl catastrophe on time.
Volodymyr Groysman
also noted that the country cooperates closely with the European Bank for
reconstruction and development and the European Commission and thanked the
partners for their attention and assistance in solving complex problems of
overcoming of consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe".
