On March 18, 2016 in the framework of his visit to Brussels, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin met with Vice President of the European Commission for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič.
During the meeting special attention was paid to the reforms of the gas sector of Ukraine, attracting of European investments in the Ukrainian gas transportation system, as well as to the incensement of reverse gas supplies to Ukraine from the territory of the EU Member States.
Pavlo Klimkin called for further solid position of the European Commission in the energy solidarity with Ukraine and in this context, he noted the need to counter politically motivated construction of pipelines bypassing Ukraine, such as Nord Stream 2.
The EC emphasized the reliability of Ukraine as a gas transit partner to Europe.
It was noted that bringing Ukrainian energy sector in line with the Third Energy Package provides additional opportunities for further development of partnership between Ukraine and the EU in this area.
The parties also discussed future joint actions in the context of the completion on March 31 2016 the terms of the so called «winter package» on the conditions of purchasing of Russian gas by Ukraine.
