  • Ukraine and the United States treat Nord Stream-2 as a threat to Europe's energy security

Ukraine and the United States have a common understanding of how to counteract the implementation of the Russian Nord Stream 2 project, which appears a direct threat to the energy security of Europe and worsens the situation with the diversification of energy deliveries to European consumers.

This was the focus of the talks during a meeting of Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman with Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Energy Resources (ENR) at the U.S Department of State Francis R. Fannon. This is the second visit of a high-ranking official of the US Department of State to Ukraine. He stays in Kyiv following the talks on energy issues in Brussels.

The Head of Government of Ukraine stressed that the issues pertaining to the energy sector, among which are energy independence, energy security are of paramount importance nowadays. "And we are glad that the US is showing great interest in this matter. We are ready to discuss a wide range of issues of our cooperation in the energy sector", said Volodymyr Groysman.

"I would like to reaffirm overall support of the United States in the matter of energy security, above all things. We are committed to maintain robust gas transit through Ukraine and underscore the United States’ strong opposition to the Nord Stream 2 project. These two components are interconnected and part of the energy security of Europe. The United States will further stand for the diversification of energy supply routes, sources, and types to Europe", the US Assistant Secretary said.

During the meeting, the parties noted that the current Ukrainian gas transit system is reliable and capable of providing the amount of transit declared, avoiding any artificial political influences. Moreover, Ukraine has always been and still stands ready to invite global companies - market leaders, including from the USA - to managing the GTS and other energy projects in extraction, transportation of resources and implementation of alternative energy projects.

"We express our commitment to further act as a reliable partner for the United States and the European Union", emphasized Volodymyr Groysman.
