Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko discussed with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ukraine Martin Jaeger cooperation to ensure the stability of energy supply to consumers in the face of hostile attacks, as well as promising areas of cooperation in the development of the energy sector.
The Ministry of Energy told the German side about the current situation in the energy system after the recent enemy attack on the capital. He also described the measures being taken to strengthen the protection of energy facilities.
"We have once again seen that the best defence for energy infrastructure is air defence equipment. And we are grateful to our German partners for their assistance in providing Ukraine with the relevant systems," the Minister said.
German Galushchenko also thanked Germany for providing Ukraine with energy equipment that is used to strengthen the resilience of the system. Ukraine has already received 89 aid shipments from Germany totalling around 1,200 tonnes. The charity campaign is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) and implemented by the Secretariat of the German-Ukrainian Energy Partnership.
Germany is also the largest donor to the Energy Support Fund for Ukraine, which was established on the joint initiative of German Galushchenko and European Commissioner Kadri Simson at the Energy Community Secretariat. Germany's contribution to the Fund already amounts to EUR 129.5 million, and in late October, the German side announced its decision to make an additional contribution of EUR 54.3 million. An additional EUR 20 million was also provided under the German-Ukrainian Partnership to finance the procurement and supply of technical equipment.
German Galushchenko emphasised the importance of decentralising electricity generation to the local level. To achieve these goals, it is necessary to increase the capacity of distributed generation, namely gas turbines and renewable energy sources. The parties discussed prospects for deepening cooperation in this area.
The Minister stressed that an important tool for balancing the energy system was also the possibility of importing electricity from European countries. Ukraine expects that ENTSO-E will soon make a decision to increase its import capacity.
