Integration into a single language space, where English is the language of international communication, is the key to the implementation of reforms and Ukraine’s accession to the EU. This was stated by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during the presentation of the national programme to promote the English language in Ukraine.
According to the Head of Government, the plan is to launch a comprehensive and accessible English language learning programme. Open to everyone, regardless of financial status or place of living. With an individual approach and open access to educational resources.
“It all starts with the civil servants. Currently, in Ukraine, English is only mandatory for category A civil servants. However, the need of the hour is for all managers to have at least a B2 level of English. This has a direct impact on the quality of governance and the success of any reforms,” said Denys Shmyhal.
According to the Prime Minister, exchanging experiences and ideas in English is the best way to achieve mutual understanding and launch new business projects. The Head of Government stressed that Ukrainians were creating competitive products and services that could go global. English, in his opinion, will be the engine of their promotion, the driver of their success and the key to self-realisation for thousands of people.
“Ukrainians who speak English already have advantages in the job market. These include higher salaries, more career opportunities, and the ability to develop faster and, if necessary, acquire a new profession,” said Denys Shmyhal.
According to the Prime Minister, English opens up access to new opportunities in the global arena. It will take interaction with foreign partners to a qualitatively new level, as well as simplify the harmonisation of standards, norms and regulations with the EU.
The Prime Minister reminded that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine a draft law “On the use of English in Ukraine”. It officially establishes its status as the language of international communication in Ukraine.
