  • Modernisation of road border crossing points: results of USAID project

As part of the cooperation between the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development and the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine with the USAID’s Economic Resilience Activity, work continues on the modernisation of the highest priority border crossing points on the western border.

In particular, the replacement and connection of 33 modular structures at four checkpoints has been completed.

These are the premises that will be used by employees of the State Customs Service and the State Border Guard Service for their work.

For example, 10 modular buildings have been installed at the checkpoints in Volyn region. Also, respectively, 10 and 11 modular structures have been installed at two crossing points in Zakarpattia region on the border with Slovakia and Hungary.

Two sanitary modules were installed in Chernivtsi region. Electricity supply and other utilities have also been provided to all modules.

Each module is fully furnished, equipped with heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, and connected to utilities such as electricity, water and the Internet.

Also, at four border crossing points, works have begun to repair damaged road surfaces, stormwater drainage and sheds at the border crossing points, paint rail barriers and metal fencing, replace lanes, markings and road signs, and replace lighting systems to improve safety and security.

A variety of small-scale facilities, such as road barriers, recycling bins and one-tonne weighing scales, were also installed at these locations, as well as at several others.

In addition, 12 mobile dynamic truck scales were installed at six priority checkpoints. They can be easily moved to the locations where they are most needed, minimising the need to divert trucks to stationary weighing stations.

It is planned that by the end of May 2024, the USAID Project will complete the modernisation of lighting systems at 17 road and rail checkpoints.

Also for the needs of Ukrzaliznytsia, the USAID Project purchased more than 100 pieces of computer equipment, including multifunctional devices, printers, laptops, computers, laptops and uninterruptible power supplies, as well as four 50 kV diesel generators at four railway checkpoints located in Volyn, Lviv, Zakarpattia and Chernivtsi regions. This will ensure the continuity of daily operations during the power outage.
