18.09.2007 | 14:15

The Ukrainian national joint-stock company ENERGOATOM signed a memorandum of mutual understanding with the Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and the Korean Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP). The Ukrainian and South Korean companies have agreed to develop cooperation in designing, launching, operation and technical servicing of NPPs.

During one week a Ukrainian delegation studied Korea's experience of NPP construction, particularly, its economic and technical parameters, visited construction grounds where new nuclear reactors OPR-1000 and APR-1400 are being built.

According to Ukrainian experts, the world's and domestic experience of running nuclear reactors, the relevant domestic infrastructure and domestic stock of natural uranium give an opportunity to make a choice in the favor of enhanced safety reactors on slow neutrons of the water-cooled under pressure type (PWR/BBEP type).

Sixteen PWR and four PHWR reactors are functioning in Korea, securing almost half of energy generation of the country.
