The Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada passed the law on introduction of compulsory alcoholism treatment of the residents drinking to excess. This law also envisages toughening of punishment for violence in the family.

According to the law, alcohol addicted residents should be sent to the specialized medical establishments for compulsory alcoholism treatment course.

According to the statistics, 10% Ukrainians drinking alcohol become alcohol addicted. Over the last 10 years, the number of people addicted to beer increased 10-12fold. The total index of drinking alcohol beverages in Ukraine reached 12 liters per person annually. Over 40 thousand people die of alcoholism in Ukraine each year.
