History

Kirovohrad oblast’ is situated in the central part of Ukraine, on the south of Prydniprovska Height, between Dnipro and Pivdenny (Southern) Buh rivers.

Settlement of the territory of Kirovohradshchyna initiated in the period of paleolith (20-15 ths years ago) that site finds of pristine hunters prove the most known – near the village of Volodymyrivka of Novoarkhanhelsk region. Late Stone Age is represented by widely-known buhodnistrovs’ka and dnipro-donetska cultures characterized by change to reproducing agriculture (farming, cattle-breeding) as well as appearance of ceramics and weaving.

 

Political division

Towns of regional (oblast) subordination (4): Kirovohrad, Oleksandriya, Svitlovodsk, Znam’yanka.

Towns of district (rayon) subordination (8): Bobrynets’, Hayvoron, Dolynska, Mala Vyska, Novomyrhorod, Novoukrayinka, Pomichna, Ul’yanovka.

Local state administrations: Regional administration - 615 officials, district 21, total number of officials - 1782.

Local councils: Regional council – 75 deputies; District councils (21) – 1209 deputies.

Heads of local state administrations according to the Law of Ukraine “On local state administrations” form the composition of local state administrations.

Within budget assignments, prescribed for corresponding local state administrations support, their heads define the structure of local state administrations.

Enumeration of offices, departments and other structural subdivisions of local state administrations as well as typical provisions are ratified by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

 

Borders

Kirovohrad oblast’ is situated in the central part of Ukraine, on the south of Prydniprovska Height, between Dnipro and Pivdenny (Southern) Buh rivers.

Area – 24,6 ths sq km, 4,1% of the territory of Ukraine, 14 place among regions (oblast’).

Distance from Kirovohrad to Kyiv: by railway - 392 km; motor roads - 300 km

Borders upon 6 regions: Vinnytsya, Dnipropetrovs’k, Mykolayiv, Odesa, Poltava, Cherkasy.

Region is situated at the border of forest-steppe and steppe. Climate – temperate continental. Average annual temperatures: summer – +20,1°C, winter – -5,5°C. Average annual rainfall 420–537 mm.

 

Population

Total: present – 1152,9 ths people; constant – 1141,6 ths people, 2,4% of the Ukrainian population, 23 place among the regions of Ukraine, including: town - 706,9 ths people; village - 446,0 ths people.

Density of population is 46,9 people/sq km of 82 people/sq km in Ukraine.

Region is inhabited by representatives of more than 30 nationalities: Ukrainians - 85,5%, Russians - 11,7% others.

 

Economic potential

Industry

In the structure of industry production of the region the greatest relative density have food industry, mechanical engineering and metal-working, power industry and building materials industry. Sugar production has a leading role in the sphere of food industry, 11 sugar-refineries function in the region. Segment of foodstuffs in the structure of ware production of national consumption is 83%. In general there are 254 industry enterprises in the region that have their independent balance besides there are 422 small industry enterprises

 

Agriculture

In 1999 the gross grain yield was about 1270,7 ths tons, sugar beets - 512,6 ths tons, sunflower seeds - 217,9 ths tons, potatoes - 214,2 ths tons It also produced 81,7 ths tons of meat, 393,3 ths tons of milk and 100,1 m eggs. At the beginning of 1999 there were 1921 farms in the region.

 

Culture and traditions

Archeological finds of Kirovohradshchyns testifies to rapid social processes on the territory of the region, its peculiarities created conditions for tribes with various forms of agriculture that resulted into formation and development of wide range of agricultural and cattle-breeding archeological cultures.

Trypilska, yamna, catacombs culture, zrubna, chornoliska, Scythian, early Slavonic cultures give us models of folk art reflecting world outlook and moral conceptions of nations.

Thus, Trypillya settlement III century B.C. near the village of Volodymyrivka of Novoarkhanhelsk region is a model for determination of average period development of this culture. On the territory of Kirovohradshchyna the famous archaeologist O.Terenozhkin has discovered chornoliska culture (III century B.C.) characteristic by fortification of sites of ancient settlements Chornoliske, Tyasmyanske, Kalantayivske.

 

 

Nature and ecology

Region has 39 îobjects of nature and reserve fund, of state imortance: natural monument Chorny Lis (Black Forest), dendrology park Veseli Bokovenky, two game reserves (Redchyne and Chornolisky), monuments of park and garden planning (Onufriyivsky and Khutir Nadiya). Of local importance: 2 game reserves, 17 natural monuments, 4 parks - monuments of park and garden planning and 10 reserve tracts.

Main recreation resources of Kirovohradshchyna - sanitary (mild climate, picturesque banks of rivers and reservoir). Function 3 health centres, rest homes, numerous recreation departments, preventorium and camps for children.
